exploring: wuhan, china
So yes, as per my newsletter announcement, I'm leaving for the United States. Before I fly out of town, I wanted to say:
During these last 18-19 months, I actually went to a bunch of places in China. Many I'd never been to before. And I filmed a lot of them.
But then kind of got stuck trying to figure out how I wanted to showcase them so I never did... I thought it'd come to me at some point and then I'd go back to refilm if I needed to.
Now that that's an impossibility, all I can think of is how sad it is that I have so many unfinished love letters to the places I've been here.
Because, no lie, I loved every new place I visited this year. Every step out of Shanghai was its own adventure, a breath of fresh air, a great reminder of how big this country is and how many absolutely fantastic people are in it... and how nobody outside of China - heck, only a certain subset of people in Shanghai even - know much about these places.
A quote came by my feeds recently that I really resonated with.
Those who show no evidence of informed empathy, who can’t be bothered with describing or trying to describe the view out of China’s windows, their analysis should be discounted.
While I'm not holding out hope on changing the minds of anyone who's already decided that China is a monolithic evil borg out to conquer the Western world, I do at least want something on my record about the experiences that I, an American, did have while I was here at the start of the 2020s.
And the most recent location I went to was Wuhan:
In this video, I get into:
- Wuhan's history, including its part in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and how it got it's nickname of "The Chicago of China."
- What it's known for in the modern era: a LOT of university students, an obsession with breakfast and... punk rock?!
- Where you should go and some of the things you should eat should you ever get a chance to visit this awesome city.
